Dr Xuemei Chen is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences and Institute of Integrative Genome Biology at University of California, Riverside. She received a doctorate from Cornell University in 1995, and moved to the California Institute of Technology for four years of postdoctoral training. Her first post, as assistant professor, was at the Waksman Institute at Rutgers University, where she was promoted to associate professor in 2005 and won the Board of Trustees Research Fellowship for Scholarly Excellence at Rutgers University. In 2005, she  founded her current lab at the University of California, Riverside, where she was promoted to full professor in 2009 and Distinguished Professor in 2013. Her pioneering work demonstrating the existence of microRNAs in plants and uncovering their role in plant development saw her selected as an HHMI-GBMF investigator (2012-2018) and elected a member of the US National Academy of Sciences in 2013. Currently she continues to break ground on how small RNA metabolism interacts with the translation process as well as the discovery of new ways to reversibly modify messenger RNAs through the use of metabolites.
