Xiaofeng Cao is a Principle Investigator at the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Beijing, China. She completed her PhD in Plant Molecular Biology at Peking University in Beijing, China. Following that she joined Washington State University’s Institute of Biological Chemistry briefly, as a postdoctoral fellow. In 1999, Xiaofeng was recruited to the University of California Los Angeles where she worked as a research associate before she returned in 2003 to China to start her own group at CAS. Her major research interest is the area of epigenetics and how small non-coding RNAs regulate plant development. Her work in Arabidopsis and rice identified key players involved in histone methylation and demethylation and small RNA function. It also provided new mechanistic insight into the role of protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs).  For her research achievements, Xiaofeng has won prestigious awards including the National Outstanding Scientist Award 2010 and the L’Oreal Young Female Scientists Award 2010. She was selected CAS Academician in 2015 and a TWAS Fellow in 2016. She serves as the deputy editor-in-chief of Science China Life Sciences, and an editor of international journals such as Plant Cell, Current Opinion in Plant Biology and Journal of Genetic and Genomics.
