Usha Vijayaraghavan is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, which she joined as a lecturer following doctoral work on yeast genetics the California Institute of Technology (CalTech, USA) and postdoctoral research on the genetics of flowering, also at CalTech. Her research aims to understand gene regulation, cell division and differentiation in eukaryotes, including yeasts and plants, using molecular genetics and functional genomics. Usha’s research has shed light on the roles of splicing factors, the regulatory cascades controlling cell fate during floral development and plant architecture more generally.  Her contribution has been recognised by many awards and honours, including a Wellcome Trust International Senior Research Fellowship Award, a Rockefeller Foundation Biotechnology Career Development Award, and election as a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, in 2007.
