Prof. Claudia Kohler obtained her PhD at University of Freiburg,Germany and since 2010 has been Professor at the  Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences · Department of Plant Biology and Forest Genetics, Uppsala , Sweden. Her general interest is in genetic and epigenetic mechanisms governing seed development and plant speciation. Our main interest focuses on the endosperm, the tissue that supports embryo growth and is functionally analogous to the placenta in mammals. The endosperm is a major source for our daily calories; one of many other reasons to study endosperm development. Her work deciphers the role of the endosperm in controlling seed growth, regulating embryo development, as well as establishing barriers towards interspecies and interploidy hybridizations. Our main model is Arabidopsis thaliana, but her group works as well on close relatives like Capsella rubella and Capsella grandiflora. While her main focus is on basic research questions, she also strives to translate her research into practical applications.
